About FinTidy
Why another finance app
Most expense trackers are built around the past. They are very good at telling you what you spent last month and much less useful at the moment that actually matters, which is standing in a shop wondering whether you can afford the thing in your hand.
FinTidy is built around a single forward-looking number: how close you are to what you said you would save this month. Everything on the dashboard exists to keep that number honest. Log a purchase, watch the bar move. That feedback loop is the whole product.
Why there is no bank connection
Linking a bank account is the standard way to build this kind of app, and it was ruled out early. It means asking people to hand over banking credentials to a small app they have never heard of, run by someone they have no reason to trust yet.
Typing in your own figures takes a few seconds a day. In exchange, there is no credential of yours anywhere in the system, and the whole trust question goes away. That trade seemed worth making, and it still does.
What is coming
Recurring transactions, so rent and subscriptions stop needing to be entered by hand. Per-category budgets with a warning as you approach the limit. Month-on-month comparison, so a bad month is visible as a bad month. All of it in that order, roughly.
Who built it
Hi — I am Tharindu Lakshan. I build software for a living and I built FinTidy because I wanted this app to exist and it did not. It is a side project I use myself every day, which is the main reason it keeps improving.
